# How Pindar names a piece, and where he breaks his own rule

Written 23 September 2026 from the sheet (`primary_facts.SHEET`), after the collector's skull-drop audit asked whether we fully know why Pindar uses the names he does.

## The three printed fields and what they hold

- **GANg** is the species: the word before GAN. It changes by drop: skullGAN (first drop), roboGAN / cryptoGAN / nagaGAN / cyberGAN (robo drop), spookyGAN, bitGAN and its cousins (Solstice), ghostGAN / testGAN / spaceGAN / monsterGAN (Ghost drop). Odd species are one-offs or tributes: whaleGAN, blobGAN, spiritGAN, sharkGAN, qubitGAN, cryptoArtGAN, iceGAN, slenderGAN, xxxxxGAN.
- **Type** is the family or behaviour: Skull, Glitch, Ghost, Shimmer, Smoke, Cronenberg in the first drop; Bot, Cyborg, Reifier, Pup, Kook, Rotator, Reviver, Mechanic, Twins for the robots and nagas; Ghost, Monster, Zombie, Sprite for the spookies; Bit, Cloud, Artist for Solstice; Tester, Invader, Alien for the Ghost drop; Collector once (#445).
- **SubType** is the colour or look: Flaming, Rainbow, Silver, Nebulous, Primordial, Slender, Twin (first drop); Cyber, Binary, Deified (robos); Glowing, Vivid, Ethereal, Frozen, Inverted, Entangled (Solstice); Dancing, Ultra, Waking, Bloody, Shy, Shifty, Amorphous (Ghost drop).

## The naming formula

The title is built from the fields. Two patterns cover 373 of the 444 pieces in drops one to five:

- **SubType + Type + species** ("Silver Smoke skullGAN"): used only in the first drop, for 70 of its 128 pieces.
- **SubType + species** ("Rainbow skullGAN", "Frozen ghostGAN"): 46 skulls, 18 robos, 68 Solstice, 132 of the 144 Ghost-drop pieces.

So most names are trait collisions, not choices. Two pieces share a name whenever their fields collide.

## Where the formula breaks, by drop

- **Skull drop (12 breaks).** The three Named pieces (#1, #2, #3). Seven titles where a word in the title is NOT one of the piece's fields: #21 Beanie (it wears a propeller cap, the collector says), #34 Heart, #39 cyclops (one eye), #44 Ancient (Primordial in the fields), #55 Warrior, #17 (title says Ghost, Type says Glitch), #128 RainbowShimmer run together. Two spelling slips: #73 Gltich, #123 Cronenber. The creature skulls (whale, blob, spirit, shark) keep the formula through the species word.
- **Robo drop (46 breaks, most of the drop).** Pindar stopped using the formula. The robots take a made-up compound (Rainbot, Firebot, Silverbot, Smokebot, Twinbot, Ghostbot, Flamebot, Slenderbot, G1itch1ng, G1itchb0t, B1-b0rg, S1-b0rg) that echoes the SubType or Type, plus the eight palindrome names on the nagas. Only 18 of 64 robo titles follow the formula. The robo drop is the drop of hand-made names.
- **Robo drop, what the collector's eye adds (24 September 2026).** The name, SubType and essence agree with one another even where the art disagrees. #145 S1-b0rg is Silver with essence 'silver' but looks flaming; #150 Firebot is Flaming with essence 'fire' but looks silver. The skull-drop behaviour words also stop describing behaviour here: two Ghost-type robos never fade (#156, #169), both Shimmer-type cryptoGANs lack the slow Shimmer colour (#143, #168), and two Smoke-type cryptoGANs look rainbow or flaming (#133, #165). In this drop, the label words behave like name material rather than descriptions of the picture. The Eyes trait behaves the same way: it only ever says 0, 2, 4 or 8.
- **Spooky drop (13 of 16 break).** Every spooky has a costume name (Pirate, Pumpkin, Mummy, Count, Masked, Friendly Clown, Angry Clown, 8bit, Skullbot) that is in no field. The fields (Ghost, Zombie, Monster; Rainbow, Flaming) describe the look; the title describes the costume.
- **Solstice (20 breaks).** The tributes (#228, #246, #264, #282), Sol and Luna, the two named after other artists' collections (#210 noohpGAN, #211 mazzoneGAN), "Ghostly" used as a title word for Type Ghost (7 pieces), and three where title and fields disagree: #293 Vivid Glitch bitGAN (Type Cloud), #298 Slender Twin bitGAN (Type Twins), #268 Bird monsterGAN.
- **Ghost drop (12 breaks).** Exactly the Named pieces plus Fire Squid and Spin Twins. Otherwise the formula holds on 132 of 144.
- **Review (26 of 68 break).** The tributes, the Named pieces, and a run of descriptive titles (Staring, OG, Smoky, Ghostly, Horned, Chromatic, Vibrant, Cloudy, Seasonal, Invading) that name what you see rather than the fields. Ten Review titles claim a species the fields do not give (see the tag "Titles that contradict the piece's own trait columns").

## What this says

1. In the first drop and the Ghost drop the formula is the rule, so a broken title is a deliberate act (the creature skulls, Beanie, Heart, cyclops, Ancient, Warrior; the Named pieces). In the robo and spooky drops hand-made names are the rule, so a formula title there is the odd one.
2. The Type field is where labels lie. The collector's audit found Shimmers not called Shimmer (#98, #102, #120, #122), Ghost behaviour not called Ghost (#25, #74, #115), Ghosts that do not fade (#57, #105), and 40 skulls called Glitch of which only the prime-position ones glitch.
3. The Eyes field is not reliable to the eye: on 21 of 128 skulls the collector counts a different number.
